Why use an EMR?
I liked the idea of flexibility with recording medical data, and I knew that the future of record keeping was in EMRs. Ten years ago, they were very few EMRs on the market, and Praxis was clearly superior. Obviously I made the right choice.

Decision for Praxis (current 3.5 user)
I remember the exact date I started using Praxis, September 1st 1998. Initially, I could only deal with charts and note taking. Now, Praxis encapsulates everything including labs and pathology that are very important for Gastroenterology. While the decision for which EMR to implement is harder to make today than ten years ago, I would not do it any differently.

Professional and customized report making
I write reports on a regular basis. Praxis works superbly for me in this respect. It has streamlined addition of diagrammatic information into the system. Praxis is incredibly flexible with generating reports – I even have the freedom to create my own report model for Gastroenterology, using my own words, how I think, and how I practice medicine. Other EMRs just don’t do this.

Unrivalled and constantly improving patient automation
Compared to even five years ago, the advances made to Praxis patient automation have been simply incredible. I can only imagine the advancements that will be made with subsequent versions! I believe that the future of automation is in patient portals, patient kiosks, and bi-directional lab modules that not only allow communication both ways between Labs and my Praxis system, but also allow my patients to log on remotely, and view the results of their lab check on cholesterol levels without coming into my office. For now, 50% of automation in my practice is for note-generation, customized health maintenance, medication and scheduling. This means that for every patient visit, I send the entire patient report to referring providers. There has been a marked improvement in the continuation of my patient care, and Praxis does it all for me on my behalf.

Excellent Investment
Before using Praxis, I spent $1000 a month on dictation. I now spend zero money, and not only save on filing costs because my practice is going paperless, but also save on an incredible amount of space from remove the charts from my office. , While I do need an employee to scan data into the system, which can take up to 30mins a day, it is well worth it.

Multiple Coding
Gastroenterology has far more difficult coding than Family Practice for example. There is multiple coding and a modifier available in Praxis v4.0 that I am very curious to try out. This, coupled with the new Praxis Knowledge Exchanger, provides the opportunity to share knowledge bases with doctors who understand the nuances of multiple coding and modifiers and the Gastroenterology specialty. This is unprecedented with any other EMR.

Seamless CPG for system of payments
Praxis is miles ahead of the competition. The CPG system for payments increases the quality of medicine because it streamlines processes for tests, labs, and other nuances of running an EMR. In the future when the industry as a whole switches to pay for performance systems, Praxis will be ready for it!

When a patient calls, I now have no need to look for charts – I have all the information, in MY words, the way I want it, available at the click of a button of MY choice. Medical consultations on paper are obsolete, and thanks to Praxis, my practice of medicine no longer revolves around generating and interpreting paper-charts that I cannot query, cannot research, and cannot annotate as I please. Thanks to Praxis, I no longer have to deal with charts that I cannot use.
