Optimally, the server where Praxis resides should be dedicated only to Praxis. If this is not possible, then please review your server specifications with your IT consultant and with Praxis EMR technical support prior to installation. As virtual environments are still being tested, we can not recommend them at this time. |

Windows Configuration for optimal Oracle Performance
What should not be run on the database server?
To maintain optimal uptime, there are some common sense items that should never be
run on a database server; these include:
- DNS server–If for any reason the server needs to be stopped for maintenance,
domain naming will no longer work
- Domain Controller–For the same reasons as the DNS, except with greater
negative enterprise consequences. The database server should not act as a
primary or secondary domain controller
- Router–The database server should not act as a network router
- File and/or print server–The database server should not act as a file and/or print
server since these functions can consume CPU and memory resources as well as
network bandwidth
- Terminal Services/Citrix Services–These types of services require a large amount
of memory, depending on user load
- Disable the following services–These services are unnecessary for the database
server and utilize valuable system resources:
- License Logging Service
- Plug and Play
- Remote Access Autodial Manager
- Remote Access Connection Manager
- Remote Access Server
- Telephony Service
- Unused Network Protocols–You should remove all unused network protocols,
thus only keeping the protocol that you are using with Oracle

Note: For a network based on Terminal Services or Citrix, consider using a minimum of 512 MB of RAM memory per connected workstation, dedicated only to Praxis. In addition, fast hardrives such as Serial ATAs or SCSI in Stripping Raid configuration are preferred. Citrix is only recommended today for large clinics with more than 20 workstations. |

| ▪ Backup system for Praxis |
| |
We recommend using professional Software Backup systems for the Praxis database. Most of our customers have had good results with DAT/Tape device systems, for the following reasons:
- The DAT/Tape can handle large amount of data and the Praxis database will grow with time.
- It is a stable and very reliable system that has been on the market for years.
- Prices of these devices are reasonable. The Praxis database will be an average of 5 GB of space in hard drive, therefore a DAT/Tape of 12/24 GB is suggested.

Note: These kinds of backup system are required due to the robust nature of your medical database over time. The backup performed by an Oracle system with Praxis data is called an 'offline backup'. The backup systems named above will automatically take Oracle offline and make a safe copy of all Praxis data after office hours. There are alternative brands that support this procedure, however the programs named above are those which Praxis technical support have tested extensively. |

Note: These backup systems sometimes offer special software agents to handle Oracle databases. It is not necessary to buy them. Praxis takes care of the selective data extraction for secure backups. |

| ▪ Other Requirements |
| |
Internet:
- A connection to the Internet is essential. This allows you to download automatic updates from our website. You will also need it for future training and technical support.
- RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks): Any type of RAID system is supported. It is left to the Network Administrator criteria, taking into account the real needs of the clinic.
- RAID 10 or RAID 0+1 will dramatically improve the Oracle database speed and data security for a Praxis network system, while RAID 5 will decrease the performance on a Praxis network system.
Wireless:
- Hardwiring your office to the internet is always the best solution. However, if you seek the convenience of wireless PCs, you do have the option of using them through a Terminal Services connection to a computer that is hardwired to the internet. Setting up a simple remote connection will give you the flexibility of wireless internet with the dependability of a hardwired internet connection. Please ask our team for more details about how to set this up.
Monitor:
- Minimal Resolution of all monitors should be 1024 x 768 pixels.
- 14-15 inches, 256 colors, 1024*768 pixels is the minimum requirement.
- The recommended monitor for Praxis is 17".
